Germany’s Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmarkt)

are a delightful tradition, and even the neighborhood market I visited last winter had a warm, festive atmosphere that made the season feel truly special.
From late November to the end of December, Berlin comes alive with sparkling lights and joyful energy. During my first year in the city, I also visited iconic markets like Charlottenburg Palace, Gendarmenmarkt, or Alexanderplatz. Their grand backdrops and lively atmosphere were unforgettable, and they remain some of my favorite Christmas memories.

The Origins of Christmas Markets

Christmas markets date back to the 14th century, when people gathered to buy warm clothing and food to help them through harsh winters. Over time, these practical markets transformed into celebrations closely tied to Christmas traditions.

Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt is a wonderful example of this history. Held in front of a historic church, it reflects its roots while embracing the festive season. Wandering through rows of stalls offering handmade candles and ornaments, you can’t help but feel the holiday spirit. Even if you don’t plan to shop, the warm, inviting atmosphere makes the visit worthwhile.

Delicious Treats to Enjoy

No trip to a Christmas market is complete without sampling the food and drinks!

First, there’s the classic Glühwein (mulled wine), a drink that warms you from the inside out on cold winter nights. There’s something truly comforting about holding a steaming mug in your hands as the chill of the evening melts away. Made from red wine infused with cinnamon, cloves, and orange, Glühwein captures the essence of Christmas in every sip. Many stalls serve it in beautifully decorated mugs, making the experience even more enjoyable. I loved it so much that I even brought home bottled Glühwein from the supermarket to relive its cozy charm during quiet nights at home!😆

Then there are the smoky sausages, grilled over open flames. The aroma alone will stop you in your tracks. Whether tucked into a crusty bread roll or enjoyed on their own, these hearty treats never fail to hit the spot.😋

Another favorite is raclette cheese, melted and poured generously over fresh bread. It’s rich, creamy, and absolutely comforting on a cold evening—a little indulgence that always feels worth it.😍

For something sweet, my kids adore crêpes. With chocolate, sugar, apple compote, etc., they’re a simple yet irresistible treat that brings smiles all around. I’ll admit, I can’t resist sneaking a bite!🤭
