For 4 people
1/ Put 500 g of milk, 2 teaspoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence, and a pinch of salt in a pot and bring to a boil.
2/ Add 125 g of rice to the pot. Once it boils again, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
3/ While the rice is simmering, prepare your toppings by cutting the fruit or setting out sauces.
4/ When the rice reaches the desired creamy consistency, turn off the heat. Transfer the Milchreis to serving bowls, add your preferred toppings, and enjoy warm or chilled.
โญ๏ธTips for Perfect Milchreisโญ๏ธ
โญ๏ธTop It Your Way: Add your favorite fruits, such as apples, blueberries, bananas, or kiwis, for extra flavour and colour. This recipe uses cherry sauce and cinnamon sugar as toppings, but feel free to get creative!
โญ๏ธEnjoy It Warm or Cold: Milchreis is delicious both warm and cold. Warm Milchreis, topped with cinnamon sugar or a dollop of fruit compote, is perfect for cozy moments. Served cold, it transforms into a refreshing dessert, paired with fresh fruit or a drizzle of sauce.
โญ๏ธPlain and Simple Comfort: If you prefer a slightly sweet and simple taste, Milchreis is satisfying on its own. Itโs also a comforting option when you catch a cold or have a reduced appetite. In our family, my eldest daughter, who isnโt fond of Japanese okayu (a simple rice porridge), always requests Milchreis when she has a cold.๐
โญ๏ธChoosing the Right Rice: In Germany, youโll find rice specifically labeled for Milchreis, which has smaller grains and a sticky texture similar to Japanese rice. Japanese rice works wonderfully as a substitute. Occasionally, I also use risotto rice, which makes equally satisfying results.
