This vibrant tomato and lamb’s lettuce salad was inspired by a dish my French mother-in-law once served. It was incredibly simple—just tender lamb’s lettuce dressed with raspberry vinegar, salt, and pepper—but the fresh, fruity aroma and delicate acidity of the vinegar left a lasting impression.🩷 Since then, I’ve been making my own version of this French-inspired salad, adding colorful seasonal tomatoes and a handful of nuts to give it a personal touch. It’s now a family favorite, perfect as a light starter or a refreshing side dish for any meal.

Ingredients

Cooking time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:

For 4 people:

  • 400 g of Colorful Tomatoes
  • 100–120 g of Lamb’s Lettuce (Mâche)
  • 30 g of Salad Mixed Nuts
  • A Small Amount of Feta Cheese (optional, to serve on the side)

For the Raspberry Vinaigrette

  • 4 teaspoons of Raspberry Vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Fleur de Sel (or natural salt)
  • A Pinch of Black Pepper
How to make it:

1/ Prepare the ingredients: Gently rinse the lamb’s lettuce and soak it in water for about 10 minutes to refresh the leaves. Then drain well and pat dry. Cut the tomatoes into bite-sized pieces as you like.

2/Make the salad base: In a large bowl, whisk together the raspberry vinegar, olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Add the lamb’s lettuce and gently toss to coat it evenly with the dressing.

🌟Our Favorite Salad Tips🌟

⭐️What’s Lamb’s Lettuce, Anyway?: It might be hard to find in Japan, but in France and Germany, lamb’s lettuce—also known as mâche in French or Feldsalat in German—is commonly sold next to other salad greens in most supermarkets. Its tender leaves and delicate texture make it incredibly easy to eat. Even my husband, who usually avoids salad, really likes this one. 😊That’s why it shows up often at our table.

⭐️Soak for a Fresh, Crisp Texture: Here’s a tip I learned from my mother-in-law: soak lamb’s lettuce in water for about 10 minutes after washing.💧 The leaves will perk right up—soft, fresh, and full of life. It makes a world of difference!

⭐️Dress the Greens First: A Japanese mom friend once told me this great trick: before adding anything else, toss the greens alone with the dressing.💡 When one ingredient soaks up the flavors first, the whole salad becomes more balanced and satisfying. I’ve followed this advice ever since!

⭐️Add a Touch of Herbs: A little thyme or rosemary goes a long way. Just a few leaves can lift the aroma and give the salad a fragrant, sophisticated touch.🌿

⭐️The Magic of Raspberry Vinegar: I first discovered raspberry vinegar in France, and it was love at first taste. Its bright, fruity aroma instantly transforms a simple salad into something elegant. The best part? You can easily find it in German supermarkets, too! Every time I serve this salad to guests, someone always asks, “What’s in this? It’s delicious!”😄

⭐️Feel Free to Switch Up the Vinegar: No raspberry vinegar? No problem! Try white wine vinegar or balsamic instead. Feel free to match the dressing to your main dish or your mood—this salad is flexible and fun to experiment with.

⭐️A Side That Goes with Everything: Whether you’re serving Japanese, Western, or anything in between, this salad fits right in. It’s light, colorful, and versatile—and it often makes an appearance alongside other Umami recipes. Try it with the dishes below and see how well it pairs!
