A Gentle Lactose-Free Life in Dubai

In a previous blog post, I wrote about our gluten-free life in Dubai.

In our family, we do not avoid gluten completely, but we have started to pay a little more attention to it in our everyday meals. Since then, the way I look at ingredients in supermarkets has changed a little.

And just like gluten-free products, another thing that caught my attention was lactose-free products.

However, I would like to mention one thing at the beginning: our family does not follow a completely lactose-free diet. This article is not a strict guide for people who need to avoid lactose completely. It is simply a record of the gentle, relaxed lactose-free choices we have started to include in our daily life.

Not Strictly Lactose-Free, Just a Gentle Choice

When we lived in Berlin, one of my husbandโ€™s friends could not tolerate lactose at all.

When he came to our home, we carefully checked the labels of snacks and ingredients. Even for small sweets or simple snacks, we needed to look at the ingredients one by one to make sure they were safe for him.

Through that experience, I learned that for people who truly need to avoid lactose, lactose-free food is very important and must be taken seriously.

So this blog post is not meant to say, โ€œThis is safe for everyone.โ€ If you need to avoid lactose completely, it is important to check product labels carefully and, if necessary, follow professional advice.

In our family, it is not that strict.

We are not trying to give up dairy products completely. Instead, we are simply choosing options that feel a little lighter in our everyday meals.

Why I Started Paying Attention to Lactose-Free Products

The first reason I started paying attention to lactose-free products was my husbandโ€™s blood test result, which I also mentioned in my previous gluten-free blog post.

After that, I tried making sweets that were both gluten-free and lactose-free. Through this, I realized that even if I changed some of the usual ingredients, the result could still be surprisingly delicious.

Later, I also started using lactose-free yogurt myself. And somehow, my stomach felt lighter.

Lactose is a natural sugar found in milk and dairy products. To digest it, our body needs an enzyme called lactase. When there is not enough lactase, lactose may not be fully digested, which can lead to bloating, gas, or a heavy feeling in the stomach. This may be why some people feel lighter when they choose lactose-free milk or yogurt.

Of course, this is only my personal feeling. What works well for one person may not work for another. Still, simply changing my morning yogurt to a lactose-free one felt easy to continue, and for me, it became a small but comfortable change.

Now, I often use lactose-free yogurt, lactose-free milk, and plant-based butter in cooking and baking. Plant-based butter is not exactly a lactose-free dairy product; it is a dairy-free, plant-based option. But it is easy to use in cakes and everyday cooking, so it often appears in our kitchen.

Lactose-Free Products I Found in Dubai Supermarkets

What I found especially interesting in Dubai is that lactose-free choices are not limited to milk and yogurt.

Of course, lactose-free milk and yogurt are relatively easy to find. They are convenient for breakfast, desserts, and baking, and they are easy to include in daily life.

But what surprised me even more was the cheese section.

I found lactose-free mozzarella, cheddar, feta, and halloumi. These products really open up more possibilities in cooking.

Mozzarella can be used in salads or gratins. Cheddar works well in sandwiches and baked dishes. Feta is perfect for Mediterranean-style salads. Halloumi can be grilled and served as a satisfying main ingredient.

When we hear โ€œlactose-free,โ€ we may imagine giving something up. But seeing these products made me feel the opposite: it can actually give us more choices.

Why Are Lactose-Free Products Easy to Find in Dubai?

After seeing so many lactose-free products in Dubai supermarkets, I started to wonder why there were so many options here.

According to several articles and market reports, there seem to be a few reasons why lactose-free products and dairy choices are becoming more visible in the UAE.

First, Dubai is a very international city. People from all over the world live here, so food preferences, physical needs, and cultural or religious eating habits are very diverse. The supermarket shelves often reflect this diversity, with products from many countries and many โ€œfree fromโ€ options.

Another reason may be the growing awareness of lactose intolerance and digestive comfort. For people who feel heavy, bloated, or uncomfortable after drinking milk or eating yogurt, lactose-free products can be a way to enjoy dairy without giving it up completely.

There is also another interesting point: dairy products are deeply connected to everyday food culture in the Middle East. Yogurt, labneh, cheese, halloumi, and feta often appear on the table. So perhaps the demand is not only about removing dairy from the diet, but also about enjoying familiar foods in a way that feels better for the body.

When I see lactose-free mozzarella, cheddar, feta, and halloumi in Dubai supermarkets, I feel that this variety reflects exactly that.

Lactose-Free Ingredients We Use at Home

At home, the lactose-free products we use most often are yogurt and milk.

Yogurt is easy to use for breakfast. It goes well with fruit or granola, and it is also useful for making desserts. Lactose-free milk can be used in cakes, desserts, and sauces.

We also often use plant-based butter in baking and everyday cooking. It has a slightly different flavor from regular butter, but it is convenient when I want something a little lighter or when I want to reduce dairy.

Of course, we do not make everything lactose-free. Depending on the dish, I still use regular cheese or butter. What matters to us is that it feels natural and easy to continue. We simply choose what we can include little by little in everyday meals.

Recipes to Enjoy with Lactose-Free Ingredients

Lactose-free ideas are not only for sweets. They can also be used in everyday meals.

For example, my blueberry yogurt flan can be made with lactose-free yogurt. The gentle acidity of the yogurt goes beautifully with the sweet and slightly tart flavor of blueberries, making it a light and easy dessert to enjoy.

My cocoa pound cake can also be made with lactose-free milk and plant-based butter. Because it has a rich cocoa flavor, it still feels satisfying even with lactose-free adjustments.

And it is not only about sweet recipes.

My halloumi and apple salad can also become part of this gentle lactose-free approach if it is made with lactose-free halloumi and lactose-free yogurt.

The salty flavor of grilled halloumi, the sweet and fresh taste of apple, and the yogurt-based sauce come together beautifully. It keeps the satisfying feeling of cheese, while still feeling a little lighter.

When we hear โ€œlactose-free,โ€ we may think of removing something from our food. But in reality, it can be as simple as changing a few ingredients in familiar recipes.

Not About Giving Up, but Enjoying Food More Lightly

For our family, lactose-free is not a strict rule.

It is not about giving up dairy products completely.

Instead, it is a small choice that helps us enjoy everyday meals in a lighter and more comfortable way.

Of course, if you truly need to avoid lactose, checking product labels carefully is very important. But if you simply want to feel a little lighter or enjoy dairy products in a gentler way, lactose-free options may be worth trying.

It is not about forcing yourself to give something up. It is about enjoying familiar foods in a way that suits you a little better.

The lactose-free products I found in Dubai taught me that food adjustments can be gentle, flexible, and still delicious.
